The Ampersand Art Supply Scratchbord Lorikeet Kit is a beginner-friendly art set that includes a 5"x7" Scratchbord, a fine-point scratch knife, and a transfer pattern. Using the Transfer Pattern
- Prepare your supplies: Place your Scratchbord on a flat surface and lay the included lorikeet pattern on top.
- Transfer the design: Place a sheet of graphite or tracing paper between the pattern and the board. Use a pencil or stylus to trace the lines of the lorikeet firmly. This will leave a faint, visible outline on the black surface of your board.
- Trace your guidelines: The faint graphite lines will serve as your roadmap.
Scratching Tips
- Hold the knife like a pen: Use a natural, comfortable grip. Start by scratching out the brightest highlights of the lorikeet’s feathers and eyes. [1]
- Vary your strokes: Use short, quick strokes to create texture for the plumage. Use smoother, continuous lines for the branches and leaves in the background. [1]
- Control your values: Remember that every line you scratch reveals white underneath. Leave the black ink intact for shadows and depth.
- Add Color (Optional): If you want a vibrant, colorful lorikeet, apply transparent Scratchbord inks to the exposed white areas. You can re-scratch the inked areas once they dry to refine your highlights. [1, 2, 3]
